Speed Dating is a discussion strategy that allows students to engage in several short discussions around a specific topic — from a factual conversation about a text to a discussion in which students share evidence-backed opinions on a topic. In this strategy, students read and annotate articles to learn about content material and annotate the articles in order to identify important information about an assigned topic or a topic of their choice. I have always done speed dating in the ASL classroom for getting to know you, introductions, describing yourself , and telling about your vacations. But as I was working in my classroom a while back a thought occurred to me…Why am I not speed dating with famous Deaf people? So I set out to make this activity incredibly fun because I think it is important for students to know about Deaf people, who they are, and the contributions that have made to society.

The first thing I did was make a list of some Famous Deaf people that I knew would be easy to find information about online. My goal of this was to give my ASL 2 students a brief introduction to some Deaf people in the community, past, and present, then have them talk about them as if they were them. I used this activity during my personality traits unit.

Oh, this lesson is awesome! Because of the nature of the class, the students do not tend to be readers, nor are they generally intrinsically-motivated to read. They really enjoyed the lesson, and my eighth grade library assistants, who saw the speed dating as they worked in the library, all asked me to do this with their classes, too.

As I have more of my materials developed, I’ve been working on improving or modifying existing activities to better meet learning objectives.

I have a number of activities where I ask students to interview classmates, and in the past I’ve done this as a free-for-all where they get up and move around the classroom. This worked pretty well in higher ed, but in K, what usually ends up happening is that I get a few big clumps of people that are answering the questions as a group. Efficient, yes, but part of the goal of the activity is to get them repetitions asking and answering the questions.

Using a Speed Dating Protocol to Think Critically about Writing

I know this is a rare feat, especially in the secondary setting, but I am not exaggerating. Speed dating is the real deal. It tricks students into learning and will make your teacher heart warm and fuzzy inside.

Cowboy shootout. Speed dating. Find someone who finish before anyone else.

Students will be able to identify and use appropriate databases to form an effective research strategy. Students will be able to differentiate databases based on functionality and content scope. This activity works best if all students are in the same discipline, although it can be scaled to include general research databases or multiple disciplines.

Part C asks students to quickly identify a research topic and evaluate their databases by searching for that topic. This will work if students already have a research topic in mind for an assignment. If not, you may wish to offer one or more examples for them to use, or skip it entirely.
